If it is your front tooth the answer is generally NO, unless the tooth is quite weak. If is not your front tooth, that is one of your posterior teeth, the answer is generally Yes.

19. crown on root canalWhen it comes to your front teeth you should understand that due to the anatomy/shape and function of front teeth, they are not subjected to the kinds of forces posterior teeth are and are generally much less subject to vertical fracture.

When it comes to your back teeth, the teeth you chew with, you should understand that when you have a root canal (Endodontics) done on one of your teeth, your tooth is greatly weakened and will become more brittle over time. Crowns are most valuable as a way of making your tooth stronger and preventing fracture and loss.

Your back teeth generally have two, three or more canals and more tooth structure must be removed in order to do the root canal as opposed to your front teeth which almost always have only one canal. If one of your front teeth or any tooth in your mouth is not going to be crowned it should at least be strengthened with a well done bonded composite restoration which extends at least into the beginning of the root canal. No root canal filling material should be left in the crown portion of your tooth.

It is also good to know that if you have a very weak tooth especially where a lot of your tooth structure is missing in your tooth, your root canal tooth should be further strengthened by a post or posts of titanium or other equally strong material. When a post or posts are used they should extend about 2/3ds of the way down the root of your tooth in the canal or canals and should be fused through bonding to the tooth.

In general, if one of your teeth that has had a root canal done, has previously had a large filling/ restoration or has a crack in it, it is much better to crown your tooth.

At Wilton Dental Associates we strongly believe NO ONE should ever lose a tooth and we have found that if your Root Canal in done properly, the remaining tooth structure of your tooth is reinforced properly, and the crown on your tooth Is done properly, your tooth should last indefinitely.

If you really want to have a healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime you need a team who will provide the technology and support to achieve this, who have the goal of eliminating the cause of dental disease and who GUARANTEE results.
