From the Temple University School of Dentistry, University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry, and the Las Vegas Institute, Dr. Strait has received advanced postgraduate training in the treatment of TMJ problems and head and neck pain.

What is TMJ-TMD?

TMJ-TMD also known as temporomandibular joint disorder and MPD (myofascial pain dysfunction) or craniomandibular dysfunction is a neuromuscular disorder affecting the temporomandibular joints. These joints are located on each side of your head that help enable you to yawn, eat, speak and chew by working with the muscles, ligaments, discs and bones surrounding it.

TMJ is characterized by the following symptoms that occur:

  • Headaches
  • Facial pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Sore, chipped, broken, or worn teeth
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw
  • Limited jaw movement
  • Chronic pain in the jaw, teeth, face, head, neck, shoulders, or back, or any combination of these areas
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or dizziness
  • Snoring
  • Grinding of teeth
  • Frequent ear infections
  • Restricted airway

Neuromuscular dentistry can help alleviate these symptoms.

Bridges and Dentures

Wilton DentalThe loss of multiple teeth is more than just an aesthetic misfortune. While teeth do look great in a smile, they also serve as a most necessary component of your facial structure and lifestyle! When multiple teeth are missing, the skin of the face sags, eating and speaking habits are compromised, and even jawbone loss can occur. We offer restorative solutions to replace those missing teeth and the confidence that went with them.

Dentures

Dentures are a set of artificial teeth that appear and act just like natural teeth. They can be used for eating and speaking, but are also removable when necessary. Today’s advancements have made dentures much more comfortable for everyday use.

Custom dentures are made using measurements taken from your own jaws, so the fit is natural and exact. With proper care, cleaning, and maintenance, a set of dentures will last for many years.

We guarantee our partials as we do our crowns – indefinitely. Therefore, we recommend only the brands that use the best precision technology, with stress breakers to allow for natural movement. This technology results in almost no breakage, and this type of attachment can be easily adjusted for retention, etc.  One preferred brand is Bredent.

Bridges

When only one or a few artificial teeth are needed, a dental bridge can provide a more permanent solution. Bridges can be affixed firmly into place for results that are very realistic.

Just like any other custom appliance, an impression of your mouth and teeth will need to be taken in order to fabricate replacement teeth of the perfect size and shape. Once the artificial teeth are ready, they will be cemented into place using the two surrounding teeth as anchors.

The artificial teeth may be porcelain, fused to high noble white metal, or they may be zirconia, which is synthetic diamond. Our preferred brand is Lava™ Zirconia by 3M

In order to guarantee the longevity of your artificial teeth, make sure to brush and floss routinely and maintain regular dental checkups.

Dental Implants

Wilton DentalThe loss of a tooth can be a great blow to your self esteem and day-to-day life. Not only can missing teeth affect one’s appearance, but can also negatively affect eating habits and facial bone structure. Fortunately, great advancements in prosthodontics have made it possible to permanently replace missing teeth with dental implants.

The Dental Implant Process

Once a tooth has been completely removed, the first step in placing a dental implant is to install a root-like titanium screw directly into the jawbone. This screw will need to be installed by a specialist and given sufficient time to fuse with the jawbone and surrounding tissues. When this process is complete, the screw acts just like the roots of a tooth and holds the replacement firmly in place.

When your dentist has determined that the screw has healed into place, a small post or abutment can be attached. This will provide an anchor for your replacement tooth. A new artificial tooth will be produced using a custom mold taken from your own mouth. The color, size, and shape will match your original teeth very closely, so you can feel confident that your restored smile is perfect and symmetrical.

Dental Implant System

We now offer the most advanced implant technology available, Ankylos by Dentsply, because this is the first system that guarantees the stability, longevity, permanent aesthetics, and periodontal health of the implant, by preventing any bone loss or ditching (wear) of the bone around its base.

Care of Your Dental Implants

Once the dental implant has been placed and healed properly, it will serve you with the same strength and integrity as a natural tooth. Care for it as you care for all of your teeth, with regular brushing and flossing.

Periodontal Care & Surgery

Preventative Care for Brookfield, CT, Newtown, CT, Redding, CT & Neighboring Areas

Dr Strait is a periodontist as well as a general and cosmetic dentist and has advanced post-graduate specialty training and experience treating and correcting all aspects of periodontal defects and disease.

However, the basis and long term success of all periodontal care is the elimination of periodontal pathogenic bacteria by effective oral hygiene and preventive care.

Periodontal Surgery

The purpose of periodontal surgery is the repair or regeneration of existing defects in the gums, bone, and supporting structures. If surgery is required, you will not need to visit a separate specialist to have it done, but can have your surgical treatment right here at Wilton Dental Associates. Surgery, however, does not eliminate, stop, or prevent the continuation or re-occurrence of periodontal disease, nor the further destruction or recession of these tissues.

At Wilton Dental Associates, our primary purpose is to enable you to eliminate pathogenic periodontal bacteria on a permanent basis, in order to assure your success in preventing future problems and maintaining dental health.

State-of-the-Art Equipment

To help us ensure the health of your gums, we utilize these advanced dental tools:

Periodontal Screening and Recording Probe

An invaluable component of periodontal screening, this tool allows us to quickly and effectively determine the health of your gums, as well as your risk for gum disease. The PSR probe is used to examine the gum-line around each individual tooth, and measure the depth of the pockets between the teeth and gums. These measurements are recorded and calculated on a scale to determine how healthy your gum tissue is.

Antibiotic Gum Treatment

If periodontal issues are found within your gums, we act fast. Antibiotics are an effective way to treat a variety of gum problems. Depending on the type of bacteria, antibiotic therapy may be used to treat abscesses, certain types of gingivitis, periodontitis, and gum disease that has not improved with other treatments. The antibiotics will either be placed under the affected gum tissue, or it will be prescribed as an oral medication.

Ultra-Sonic Scaler

Plaque and tartar are the root causes of many types of gum disease; it is imperative that both be removed thoroughly each time you visit. When the build-up is advanced or has extended below the gum-line, an ultra-sonic scaler may be used. This instrument breaks down and removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth. High-frequency vibration breaks down bacterial cell membranes, so any build-up on the tooth or tooth root is removed quickly and completely.

Oraqix Topical Anesthetic System

We understand that although gum treatment may be necessary for your dental health, it doesn’t always feel good. That’s why we use the most advanced anesthetic methods to ensure your comfort. The Oraqix topical anesthetic system allows our hygienist to numb the gums and periodontal structures without using any other anesthesia. This enables us to perform prophylaxis cleaning, periodontal scaling, and root planing in a comfortable and painless manner.

Bonding and Contouring

Wilton Dental Bonding and ContouringThousands of people feel self-conscious about their appearance due to minor imperfections such as chipped or broken teeth.

Many don’t realize that, while these little flaws do make a world of difference in a smile, they can be mended quickly and inexpensively through bonding and coronoplasty. A few simple procedures can restore your smile to its original youth and beauty.

Coronoplasty

The contouring of teeth is known as coronoplasty. We employ this procedure as a simple way to remedy sharp edges, uneven surfaces, and teeth that stick out farther than their neighbors. Coronoplasty can also be used to create a more comfortable bite for patients.

This procedure is painless and can often be performed in a single visit. Your dentist will simply contour the hard enamel of the tooth using a special non-invasive tool that sculpts the tooth in small increments. The finished results are smooth and natural. Patients are often surprised by the dramatic difference they see after the smallest contouring of their teeth.

Dental Bonding

When teeth are chipped, cracked, or have missing pieces, we can restore them using the dental bonding procedure. Bonding implements glass-filled composite resins to fill in and reshape the affected areas for a natural and attractive finish.

A quick and straightforward procedure, bonding can be completed in one visit and usually doesn’t even require a local anesthetic. Here at Wilton Dental Associates, we use 3M Filtek Supreme Plus as our resin of choice, and it is available in a variety of colors to match the exact shade of your other teeth. This glass-filled composite resin is bonded and sculpted onto a prepared tooth. Once set and dried, the new and improved tooth will look and feel like a natural part of your beautiful smile.

Invisalign® Orthodontics

Invisalign Orthodontics at Wilton Dental Associates

Invisalign® Premier and Preferred Provider

Dr. Strait has worked with Invisalign® since its conception 20 years ago. As both an Invisalign® Premier and Preferred Provider, he is one of the most successful top providers of Invisalign® in the State of Connecticut.

Wilton Dental InvisalignStraight Teeth, No Braces.

Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign® allows people to have a much more comfortable orthodontic experience, as well as faster results.

At Wilton Dental Associates, the Invisalign® system of clear braces is not only used for straightening teeth, but is also combined with other procedures for a healthy, beautiful smile.

How Invisalign® Differs from Traditional Braces

In the Invisalign® process, we optimize the physiological movements of the teeth through the use of specialized clear aligners.

On the other hand, with metal braces, the orthodontist must determine during each visit the exact amount of pressure to apply, in order to create the desired movement; he then makes adjustments accordingly.

With Invisalign®, this has all been predetermined to minimize the time and to maximize the comfort of the procedure. Change is accomplished through a series of invisible plastic aligners that cause a fixed movement of the teeth in small increments. Fewer appointments are necessary and, in many cases, patients do not have to return to the dental office on a weekly basis during treatment.

Most importantly, Invisalign® gives you the flexibility to remove the aligners in order to clean your teeth thoroughly and to eat in a comfortable, acceptable fashion.

The Benefits of Invisalign Orthodontics

    • Improved Oral Health & Appearance: Straightens your teeth and allows for you to eat, drink and brush your teeth like you normally would. The braces are invisible which means nobody will even know that you have braces on!
    • Comfort & Safety: A smooth plastic is used to straighten your teeth rather than sharp metal that can irritate your cheeks and gums. They are shaped to properly fit in your mouth without forcing the teeth to straighten which can damage the teeth. They are easy to remove when performing your oral health care and daily activities.
    • Shorter Treatment Duration: Invisalign braces remain in your mouth for a shorter time than traditional braces. They can essentially be in your mouth for 1 to 1 ½ years whereas traditional braces can last in your mouth for up to 5 years.

Veneers

Serving Bethel, CT, Brookfield, CT, Danbury, CT, Newtown, CT, Redding, CT, Ridgefield, CT & Surrounding Communities

Wilton Dental VeneersThere may be imperfections in your smile that cannot be easily fixed, such as discoloration or spacing problems, teeth that are very different from each other in their shape, rough surfaces, or a particularly long or short tooth.

Don’t worry – we have the perfect solution!

Porcelain veneers are thin, yet strong, shells that can be permanently bonded to your teeth to achieve instant perfection.

Defects Corrected by Veneers

  • Discoloration or stains that cannot be repaired by whitening procedures
  • Unattractive spacing or gaps
  • Uneven contours
  • Worn teeth
  • Slight crookedness or uneven teeth
  • Size and shape issues

The Dental Veneer Process

Our own Dr. Strait has placed over 5,000 veneers and uses his experience to achieve remarkable cosmetic results.

  • First, he uses a series of color-balanced lights to ensure an accurate color match.
  • Then, an impression of your teeth is made to use as a mold. Molds are sent to the best cosmetic labs in the world, where veneers are fabricated using Empress Porcelain materials.
  • Once we receive the custom-made veneers, your teeth are prepared by reducing them just the thickness of a fingernail to allow for the thickness of the veneers.
  • Then the veneers are fitted to your teeth and adhered.
  • Since veneers are constructed from life-like porcelain materials, their luminescence, strength, and durability can last a lifetime.
  • The result is a gorgeous, symmetrical smile, indistinguishable from the real thing.

Ultra-Thin Veneers

Another type of dental veneer is so thin that teeth do not need to be reduced in size at all. Unlike standard veneers, this type is reversible. Dr. Strait places Lumineers ultra-thin veneers.

Contact Dr. Strait at Wilton Dental Associates to find out if you are the right candidate for porcelain veneers today!
