Answer Center

Answering Important Questions Regarding TMJ Treatment, Invisalign, Root Canal Therapy, Preventative Care & More!

Wilton Dental AnswersQ: How important to my health is my bite?
A: Very! If your bite is out of alignment, it can cause any of the following problems:

  • TMJ
  • Headache
  • Jaw and joint pain or clicking
  • Ringing and congestion of the ears
  • Dizziness
  • Loose teeth
  • Clenching and grinding of the teeth
  • Neck pain
  • Postural problems
  • Facial pain and sensitivity
  • Insomnia

Q: How important to my dental health is nutrition?
A: Critical to both dental and total health, a healthful well balanced diet is a good place to start, but unfortunately not enough. If you consider the increase in the modification, processing, genetic alteration, forced ripening, storage, foreign supply, and general manipulation of our food supply; it has become extremely difficult (if not impossible) to get all the nutrition you need for optimum health just from the food you eat.

Because of this, at Wilton Dental Associates, we believe everyone needs some supplementation.

For the past thirty plus years, I have continually studied nutrition. I have taken courses on this subject at the University of Connecticut, Temple University, Indiana University, New York University, and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as through numerous courses at national scientific meetings of the American Dental Association. I have read thousands of pages of research on nutritional supplementation, and it is my conclusion that the Shaklee Corporation produces by far the best nutritional products available anywhere in the world. In addition I, my family, and many of my friends have personally enjoyed the benefits of this companies products and expertise for many years.

I want to emphasize that I am not sponsored by, nor do I receive any monies or other payments or rewards from Shaklee. My motivation is strictly the well being of my clients and patients. On the Shaklee website, you can become a member and get a Shaklee discount, or you can order products. Please contact us for instructions on how to join Shaklee or order products.

Q: Is diet soda good for me?

A: Watch that diet soda! Drinking it can be nearly as bad for your teeth as sugary drinks. Many diet sodas contain even larger amounts of phosphoric and citric acids than their naturally-sweet counterparts, which means the acid content in these types of drinks is high enough to damage tooth enamel. Ask for our free reference sheet on the acidity levels of various drinks.

Keep a Toothbrush in Your Briefcase

In a recent study, about 40% of respondents said that a co-worker’s smile was more noticeable than his or her hair or clothes. Yet less than 45% of us brush while we’re at work. It’s a long day for teeth that are brushed after breakfast and ignored until bedtime. After each snack or meal, bacteria are hard at work producing acids that stick to tooth enamel and result in decay and gum disease. Take your toothbrush to work. But, if it’s impossible to brush, rinse your mouth with water for at least thirty seconds at some time during the day.

Q. What if I can’t brush after a meal?

A: After you eat, have a stick of gum. If you don’t have a toothbrush handy or an appropriate place to brush, chew a stick of sugarless gum instead. There’s now more evidence than ever pointing to the possibility that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after you eat could lower your chances of developing new cavities. Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which then washes away food particles and plaque that cling to your teeth after you eat.

Children and Gum Disease

It’s sad to report that gingivitis may be found in 38% of children under the age of 13; half of all kids aged 6 to 12; and 90% of adolescent children. Children’s gum disease comes from plaque, which accumulates because of poor dental hygiene, misaligned teeth, or improper care of orthodontics. So make sure you stress proper brushing and flossing with your kids, especially if they wear braces.
